Project Overview

In 2015 we were commissioned by a UK aircraft manufacturer to review the actions and procedures undertaken prior and during works to remove an area of contaminated land known as “Spoil Mound” located on the client’s site. The above ground materials located within the mound were considered to have contained asbestos containing materials.

The report was required to assess the existing site documentation (including reports, emails and laboratory data) in line with the Control of Asbestos Regulations 2012 and the Asbestos in Soil and Made Ground CIRIA C733 guide. In addition, waste designation to be assessed in line with the Hazardous Waste Regulations 2005 and the Environment Agency’s WM2 Hazardous Waste: interpretation of the classification of hazardous waste.

Our key aims and deliverables to achieve the client’s objectives included:

Review previous site investigations and reports including supporting information, review and outline CAR 2012 and outline areas most pertinent to the Spoil Mound, review the Hazardous Waste Regulations 2005 relating to asbestos in spoil/stockpile materials, review “Duty Holder” and Project Manager responsibilities, review contractor compliance and provide conclusions and recommendations.

We were able to present the findings in the final report well within the client’s estimated time frame, and added value by providing recommendations and preventive measures to mitigate against future issues with asbestos ground contamination.
