Turn ‘Good’ Into ‘Great’: Make your career more than ‘just a job’.

2nd April 2019

We spend around 92,120 hours working, over our lifetime. The company you choose to work for and the Team you work with is key to discovering your job satisfaction.

Are you dreading Monday morning? Do you wonder why some people love going to work whilst you’re playing the same week on repeat?

Finding job satisfaction can be like finding a ‘diamond in the rough’. But there are key factors to consider when choosing or changing your career or employer that can help you to discover what you need from your occupation to achieve long term job sustainability, security and satisfaction.

Motivation

Ask yourself, ‘why am I doing my job?’ Knowing your own motivations for doing your job can help determine whether you have passion, drive and inspiration to keep doing what you are doing. Working for a company that has vision and effectively communicates it with you, and aims to inspire you to continue and progress towards your goals is key to ensuring you are both satisfied and driven to deliver the best output, everyday.

Value

Value goes beyond simply meeting your salary expectations. It is the feeling you get when you are valued and appreciated by your colleagues and managers. Receiving recognition for consistent or exceeding performance and effort is key to long term sustainability and satisfaction at work.

Often when you first start out with a new company and a new Team, you are filled with enthusiasm and a drive to impress with the hope to excel in your career. If this isn’t met by other Team members who share your passion or a manager who doesn’t recognise your value to the business before you realise your own value, then it’s time to seek a new venture.

Engagement

A major factor in finding job satisfaction is engagement. Do you feel your fellow Team members, manager(s) and the company you work for are not just communicating with you, but engaging with you? Are they listening? Do they care about what you have to say and will change be made when valid points of improvement are raised? This doesn’t mean that every issue you raise will be corrected and amended to your satisfaction, but the company is lead with leadership guidance and Team input. Suggestions determined to be to the benefit of the greater good of the Team, the service users and the company should be actioned. Working with a company and leadership Team that is pliable and changing is likely to act for the benefit of all and resist the approach of ‘it’s always been done this way’.

Trust

The three pillars of job satisfaction; motivation, value and engagement are key to developing trust.

Job Satisfaction

Like with any relationship, trust in the company you work for, your managers and colleagues is imperative for all Team members to feel comfortable and visualise themselves with the organisation long term. Consistency and reliability in the way you are managed will allow you to develop a sense of where you stand within the company, and how to reach and achieve both your own and the company’s goals. Inconsistencies with how you are managed often can feel like the ‘goal posts’ are constantly moving and feeling successful and completing tasks are permanently out of reach.

One key take-home point when considering whether you are satisfied at work is whether your goals correlate with those of the company’s. Finding a company with aims and aspirations that match those of your own will likely lead to successful long term employee-employer relationship satisfaction.
