Safeguarding is Paramount: Asbestos QR Code Reduces Risks Of Exposure

7th June 2019

Asbestos QR Code labelling continues to make strides in protecting teams and contractors from the risks of deadly asbestos exposures helping to ensure the safe management of any asbestos-containing materials (ACMs) identified in buildings.

Over 15 years of experience as a group of risk management companies with a strong reputation as risk management software pioneers and the creators of the widely used innovative risk management software platform NexGen, Lucion Services have continued to develop and implement the use of risk and asbestos QR Codes in conjunction or replacing traditional asbestos warning labels within client’s portfolios.

The QR Code Concept

Combining the traditional ‘A-sticker’ asbestos warning labels with quick response risk and asbestos QR codes, the concept will enable all pertinent information on the presence of any asbestos in a particular location to be made immediately available to whoever may need it.

The idea is to connect the availability of a traditional asbestos register that details where asbestos-containing materials (ACMs) have been identified in a building with an interactive label that provides direct access to the detailed information needed to ensure the safe management of that particular situation.

To achieve this the QR code on the label is linked directly to digital site survey records incorporating full details of the condition of any asbestos containing materials (ACM) present, access restrictions and other safeguards that are required by anyone who may need to carry out work in the vicinity.

The detailed survey information is included on a password protected and proprietary NexGen database, giving clients full information of their own particular building or situation, and enabling any subsequent updates from re-inspections or pre-refurbishment surveys to be easily added.

How Can Your Health & Safety Processes Benefit From QR Codes?

Making this information directly accessible to contractors, tradesmen and buildings maintenance personnel from the label at the critical control point where ACMs have been identified is intended to significantly reduce the risk of any damage or disturbance at those areas.

It is widely understood that as long as the ACM is in good condition, and is not disturbed or damaged, there is a negligible risk. But if it is disturbed or damaged and airborne asbestos fibres are released into the air it can become a danger to health.

The new interactive QR code asbestos warning labels have been introduced as part of a comprehensive workplace system to provide accurate information on the location and condition of any ACM for anyone involved in work at that location.

Patrick Morton, C.E.O of Lucion Services, explains: “The current Asbestos Regulations require that asbestos registers need to be made available at premises at all times. In many situations, the register, whether it is in a paper format or stored in a computer, is also supported by the use of warning labels in specific locations within the building.

“Using QR code asbestos warning labels in this way ensures that all available information is properly connected and immediately accessible so that nobody can have any misunderstanding about the location or condition of any ACMs present.”

Protection Is Paramount

By using QR Codes as part of an effective risk management strategy, teams contractors and relevant stakeholders can access relevant information that is updated in real-time. This means that the potential for deadly exposure to occur accidentally due to a delay in paperwork being updated is minimised.

Patrick Morton further stated: “To ensure that all the precautions necessary to prevent exposure are maintained, the depth of information made available can also include specific instructions for certain types of work.

“In this way, the QR code, along with simple password controlled access, means the full register can be made available discreetly at all times to whoever needs it and exactly at the location or work point where it is required.”

Ensuring the asbestos register and up to date documentation is available to the relevant stakeholders is another step in protecting individuals and company reputation.
