Investing Locally: Co-op Leads The Way In Community Support

10th May 2019

Lucion joins forces with Co-op to rejuvenate Stockport’s local youth centre in time for its 130th anniversary.

The Co-op is formed of a large democratic community of individuals who have joined together to make a difference both nationally and locally. Founded upon principles of concern for the community, Co-op uses profits to support local communities and give back to its members. Since November 2017 (to October 2018), Co-op has raised £19 million for local causes and continue to demonstrate their commitment to investing in local communities.

Investing Locally

Most recently, the Co-op set about recruiting external contractors and suppliers to volunteer and join forces in rejuvenating a local youth centre in Stockport.

Stockport Lads Club was built for the youth of Stockport in 1889 over 130 years ago. Providing a range of activities for all ages in the community, the club serves as a foundation for building relationships and developing community spirit.

Supported by the Co-operative Members Community Fund, Stockport Lads Club has undergone a rejuvenation in time for its 130th-year anniversary. Material donations and skilled tradesmen were provided by Co-ops main contractors. To enable some of the skilled works to be carried out, Co-op approached Lucion to provide a targetted asbestos survey to protect the workers from potential exposure.

Asbestos Surveys

Asbestos surveys are required to assess if contractors or residents within buildings or near to contaminated grounds are at risk from asbestos exposure.

Below is a brief overview of the different types of asbestos surveys:

  • Management Survey – for compliance, no refurbishment works planned
  • Re-inspection Survey – an annual check of known asbestos items and their condition
  • Refurbishment/Demolition Survey – where works are to intrude the fabric of the building or ground

Our Team

Our dual trained, Senior Surveyor/Analyst, David Meadwell, attended the site in April. With over 8 years experience in the asbestos industry and having achieved his BOHS P402/3/4/5, BOHS P901, NEBOSH National Certificate in Fire Safety and Risk Management, IOSH Managing Safely and multiple other training qualifications and a wealth of experience in multiple sectors, David was able to provide a thorough assessment of hazardous substance risks present in the building. David has received personal glowing recommendations from multiple clients he has worked with over the years.

“I have known Dave Meadwell since October 2011, where he was our ‘Man on Site’ as far as Lucion were concerned. Delivering surveys for numerous types of Local Authority buildings is difficult, mainly due to the various staff working at these locations. I never received any complaints, and the surveys all appeared to go without incident. I am sure there were issues on site, but David dealt with these in a professional and competent way. The quality of surveys has been excellent and David has always been conscientious in delivery, and particularly helpful and knowledgeable in all my dealings with him. I can commend both David and Lucion.”
