Asbestos on vessels, offshore platforms and onshore sites.

Since 2011, under International Convention for the Safety of Life at Sea (SOLAS) regulations, installation of asbestos-containing materials was prohibited on all ships.

Asbestos in shipbuilding is particularly dangerous due to the type of asbestos used (mainly brown and blue asbestos) which was often applied in sprayed cladding which is more prone to degrading and releasing airborne asbestos fibres. Asbestos can be found in:

  • Wall/Ceiling/Floor Tiling And Panels
  • Window And Door Sealants
  • Insulation And Cladding

What asbestos testing and inspection services can Lucion provide?

  • Asbestos Surveys - Asbestos surveys are carried out to identify the presence of asbestos-containing materials in vessels and assets where the owner has a duty of care for the occupants. More specifically, asbestos surveys are to be carried out to ensure regulatory compliance and ahead of refit works taking place or at end of lift and prior to vessel dismantling for recycling/disposal.
  • Asbestos Testing - Asbestos testing is used to confirm the presence of asbestos in bulk materials and is often required to be carried out ahead of investigation works or in response to accidental disturbance of suspected asbestos containing materials.
  • Asbestos Air Monitoring - Air monitoring is carried out to provide a measurement of the ambient fibre levels within a specific area during or following asbestos works or a potential disturbance. We provide the full suite of air monitoring services, including background, leak, personal, reassurance testing, and four stage clearance procedures.

Our analysts also carry mobile laboratory workstations which allow them to complete air tests as soon as the test has been completed and deliver certificates and analytical paperwork to you straight away in both digital or hard copy formats.

Our Capabilities

Our resource is the largest directly employed risk management team in the UK with an ever growing number of competent and qualified surveyors and analysts who are all trained under our UKAS ISO 17020 and ISO 17025 accredited technical procedures.

Additionally, we operate the largest UKAS ISO 17025 accredited asbestos testing laboratory in the UK which is operational 7 days a week and 16 hours per day. As an internal resource, the laboratory provides assurances that we have the capacity to deliver projects in quick timescales, whilst consistently maintaining quality control.

The lab provides asbestos sample identification using polarised light microscopy (PLM), as well as scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and energy dispersive spectroscopy (EDS) which provide a greater level of accuracy than the methods used by the majority of UK asbestos laboratories, and includes a stand-alone soils laboratory for the qualitative and quantitative identification of asbestos in soils.

Our Innovation

Asbestos survey and analytical data is captured using our internally designed NexGen survey app and can be utilised to instantly share data with our project and technical support teams back in our UK based lab as soon as the asbestos survey and monitoring is completed for processing through our systems workflow for delivery of the survey report.
